What Are the Differences Between Industrial Gateways and Switches?

An industrial gateway is a network interconnector, also known as a protocol parser.
It not only possesses protocol parsing and device networking capabilities but also enables real-time data collection and edge computing, allowing for real-time monitoring of data and providing digital and intelligent management support for enterprises.
A switch, on the other hand, is a device that automatically completes information exchange functions within a communication system.
It can expand device access under the same network and facilitate data transmission among multiple devices through wired connections.
Both are products applied in industrial data communication, but the difference lies in the fact that industrial gateways support wireless networking communication while simultaneously enabling real-time data collection and transmission, connecting to cloud platforms to play a more significant role.
They are currently the preferred products for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).
Functional Characteristics of Industrial Gateways:
Diverse Internet Connectivity: Supports 5G, 4G, WiFi, wired Ethernet, fiber optics, LoRa, and other network access methods.
Powerful Data Collection: Embedded with protocols for various PLCs, instrumentation, power equipment, industrial robots, machine tools, etc.
Flexible Cloud Access: Supports access to remote platforms via MQTT, MODBUS, OPC, SQL, etc.
Efficient Forwarding Hub: Supports serial port forwarding and MODBUS forwarding, enabling simultaneous local and remote system access.
Convenient Remote Maintenance: Supports remote debugging, diagnosis, and program uploading/downloading for industrial equipment via device express lines.
Rich API Interfaces: Provides developed API interfaces to assist customers in building advanced, professional Industry 4.0 systems.
